Virtual Latin American Regional International Religious Freedom (IRF) Roundtable
October 23 at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT
On October 22-23, 2020, the government of Colombia is hosting a Latin American regional ministerial in Bogota.
On the first day, religious organizations, academics, and civil society will engage in six virtual panel discussions on the following topics: challenges in the promotion of freedom of religion or belief and interfaith dialogue; threats posed by extremism against religious minorities; tolerance, inclusion, and rejection of all forms of discrimination on the basis of religion or beliefs; women in faith communities; and the role of religious organizations in the promotion of religious freedom, social action, and contribution to Sustainable Development Goals.
The formal ministerial will occur on the morning of the second day. After opening remarks by leaders of the Colombian and U.S. governments, remarks will be delivered by the heads of all government delegations.
After the formal meetings conclude on October 23, we will host a Virtual Latin American Regional IRF Roundtable to focus on how we can help to achieve the overall objective of the ministerial: to generate a space for dialogue and the construction of mechanisms for regional cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean in matters of freedom of religion or belief.
Specifically, we will hear from civil society leaders in the region and discuss the development of a Latin American secretariat as a mechanism for regional cooperation and coordination, the establishment of national religious freedom roundtables throughout the region, and how they can most effectively advance religious freedom and economic prosperity for all.
