Understanding The Abrahamic Family Through Qibla Studies

October 21 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm WIB

Free

We will explore the “why” and “what” of qibla, the prayer direction of Muslims. Why do religious communities choose to face in a particular direction? What does that direction signify? Understanding of Judaism and early Christianity will provide a helpful context to understand the reason for and meaning of qibla. In doing so, understanding the qibla would help not only Muslims but also Christians and Jews to have a more comprehensive appreciation of their own religions, their shared ancestry as Abrahamic family, and what it means to their relations today.

Speaker:

  • Dr. Ari M. Gordon (Director of U.S. Muslim-Jewish Relations, American Jewish Committee)

Respondents:

  • Dr. Phil. Sahiron Syamsuddin (Lecturer, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University Yogyakarta)
  • Fr. Archimandrite Daniel Byantoro, PhD (President and Founder, Indonesian Orthodox Church)

Hosted by The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Leimena Institute.
