SEAFoRB Conference 2020 webinar: The Impact of Corona Crisis on Human Rights and FoRB in Southeast Asia
October 20 at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT
With the spread of the coronavirus, governments around the world were forced to impose far-reaching and invasive measures on their populations, including declaring a state of emergency. While restrictions on fundamental freedoms were accepted in well-established democracies and illiberal regimes alike, the latter were more prone to impose illegitimate restrictions and extend their powers beyond the immediate period of emergency response.
In this webinar, we focus on the region of Southeast Asia and examine:
How fundamental freedoms might have been illegitimately restricted in the region amidst Covid-19; How these restrictions have affected the right to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB);
How has hate speech proliferated in the region during the pandemic; – What measures and guidelines could be introduced to parliamentarians, governmental officials, and other stakeholders, to ensure the implementation of emergency powers and them being conducive to the protection of human rights;
What is the guidance to address and counter COVID-19 related Hate Speech
Held online on October 20th, 2020 from 14.00 to 16.00 (Bangkok time) ,‘’ The Coronavirus and its Impact on Human Rights and FoRB in Southeast Asia’ is part of a webinar series for the 2020 SEAFoRB Conference.
