SEAFoRB Conference Webinar 5: The Struggle of Organized Religions in Inherently Anti-religion Regimes: The Cases of Vietnam and Laos
November 17, 2020 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm EST
2020 has been a different year for obvious reasons. The coronavirus pandemic has not only changed our everyday lives but also extended the powers of government authorities. In Southeast-Asia, restrictions on fundamental freedoms are exacerbated. More than ever, there is a need for collaboration between religious communities, human rights organizations, academics, and decision-makers to promote the important and universal right to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB).
The Southeast-Asia Freedom of Religion or Belief Conference (SEAFoRB) exists to bring together such stakeholders from Southeast-Asia and beyond. The SEAFoRB Network surpasses national or religious affiliation in order to protect everybody’s right to FoRB. In the words of Jan Figel, the EU’s Special Envoy on FoRB, at last year’s SEAFoRB Conference: “we are different in identity, but equal in dignity”. We believe that as we come together, we can make a difference.
Given the circumstances, the SEAFORB conference will go online this year as we continue to address FoRB-issues in Southeast-Asia through a series of webinars starting from late September to mid-November. We are sincerely grateful to the local team in Indonesia who had already started planning the SEAFORB conference 2020. Conditions permitting, we plan to host the next SEAFORB conference in Indonesia around October/November 2021.
